The road climbs over the Mount Lebanon range and drops onto a valley floor sitting at a thousand metres. Most runs pair the temples at Baalbek with the Umayyad arcades at Anjar and a cellar stop at Ksara, and still have you back in Beirut for dinner.

The country is small enough that almost nothing needs a second hotel. Vans collect from Hamra, Gemmayzeh and the Corniche between six and eight, and drop you back before the bars fill.

Jeita Grotto
Nine kilometres of limestone gallery run under the Nahr al-Kalb valley on two levels. You walk the upper chamber past stalactites the size of church columns, then take a flat-bottomed boat along the lower river when the water is low enough to allow it. Cameras go in a locker at the door, which is why almost nobody comes home with a photo of the best part.

The Ksara tunnels
Lebanon has been making wine for thousands of years and never really stopped. Chateau Ksara ages its bottles in two kilometres of tunnel the Romans cut and Jesuit monks rediscovered in 1898, at a steady thirteen degrees all year. Tastings run to a fixed daily schedule, and the Bekaa harvest in September is the week to aim for.

The Cedars of God
A few hundred trees at two thousand metres above Bcharré are what survives of the forests that roofed temples and built the Phoenician fleet. The oldest are past a thousand years. Below them the Qadisha gorge holds monasteries cut into the cliff face, and the whole valley is on the UNESCO list. Snow shuts the road for much of the winter.

Byblos has been trading from the same harbour for 7,000 years.
